Chives are such a fun herb to grow because they are always first to come up in the spring!

That means many, many chive dishes when I’m itching to enjoy a garden-to-table meal.

This chive and onion cream cheese is a new favorite! I’ve always loved this spread from the store, so it only makes sense that homemade is even better.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Save money by making your own bagel spread! Spreadable flavored cream cheese is quite expensive, so you can save on your grocery budget by turning a block of cream cheese into your own spread!
  • This cream cheese spread is loaded with oniony flavor and dresses up so many different dishes.
  • I’m always looking for new ways to use my garden harvests! This recipe uses a lot of chives in the tastiest way.
  • This recipe is endlessly customizable. Swap ingredients, add unique inclusions, or alter amounts to make it exactly how you like it.

Ingredients

Chive and onion cream cheese ingredients labeled on a wooden table.
  • Cream cheese: Make sure it’s well softened.
  • Whipping cream: Adding a splash of heavy cream gives this whipped cream cheese a light, airy texture that holds its shape and remains spreadable, even straight from the fridge.
  • Chives: Fresh chives are best, but you can use dried chives or frozen chives in a pinch.
  • Dried minced onions: You can find these in the spice aisle of most grocery stores and health food stores. I’ve also found them on Amazon.
  • Garlic powder: Make sure you get garlic powder, not garlic salt.
  • Salt: I used Himilayan pink salt, but you can use whichever salt is your favorite.

Tips

  • Make sure the cream cheese is well softened. It will be very difficult to get it to a nice whipped texture if the cheese is cold.
  • Cream cheese saltiness varies by brand, so do a taste test before adding more salt.
  • In a pinch, dried chives will work for this recipe, though I do recommend fresh chives whenever possible.
  • Frozen chives will work well in this recipe, so be sure to learn how to freeze chives to prepare for the winter season!
  • If you can, make this cream cheese ahead of time. The flavors meld in the fridge and make it taste even better the next day.

Uses

Chive and onion cream cheese can be used for so many delicious recipes! Get creative and enjoy adding a pop of flavor to many of your spring meals.

  • Smear on your favorite savory bagel (it tastes incredible on cheese bagels).
  • Spread on sandwiches to give creaminess and flavor. This cream cheese tastes amazing on grilled cheeses, cucumber sandwiches, egg sandwiches, and more.
  • Squeeze into the center of an omelette. It may sound odd, but it tastes so good.
  • Similarly, this is a great filling for savory crepes.

FAQs

How to make cream cheese spreadable?

Allow it to come to room temperature, then whip it with a mixer and 1 tablespoon of whipping cream. Continue whipping for about a minute, then transfer to an airtight container and return to the fridge. It will remain spreadable even after it is chilled.

Are chives the same thing as green onions?

No, they are different, though they both have an oniony flavor. Green onions are more pungent than chives and have a higher water content. I generally would not use them interchangeably. You can find chives in the fresh herb section of most grocery stores, while green onions are usually in the veggie cooler.
