I love making cozy, seasonal recipes this time of year like pumpkin apple oatmeal, butternut squash bisque, and this sweet and tasty fall punch.

Ingredients for Spiced Rum Cider Punch

  • Apple cider: Fresh, unfiltered apple cider is the best for this.
  • Spiced rum: You can use Captain Morgan spiced gold rum or any spiced rum you like. Check out your local liquor store if you are unsure.
  • Orange liqueur: Triple sec or any orange liqueur works. This adds a delightful flavor and some sweetness, so don’t skip it!
  • Orange slices: Be sure to scrub the outside of the orange well and buy organic, if possible.
  • Fresh apple slices: You can use whatever you have on hand. I like to use a sweet red apple, such as Gala or Jonathan.
  • Cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise: These will infuse in the liquid and make a very flavorful cocktail.
  • Brown sugar simple syrup: This is optional! The cocktail is decently sweet without it. If you want to add some, jump ahead to the recipe here, or feel free to use maple syrup instead.

How to Make a Spiced Rum Fall Cocktail

Combine the apple cider, spiced rum, liqueur, and simple syrup in a large pitcher or a punch bowl. Whisk the mixture to thoroughly combine.

Add the cinnamon sticks, star anise pods, cloves, sliced apples, and sliced oranges to the mixture. Stir again, then cover the container.

Chill the cocktail in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or, ideally, overnight. This will allow the spices to infuse into the drink and the fruit to marinate.

Serve in a mason jar or tall glass with a handful of fresh ice. Use a spoon to scoop the fruit into the glass.

Garnish with star anise, cinnamon sticks, or additional fruit slices for a beautiful and delicious fall cocktail.

How to Make a Single Serving of Spiced Rum Cider Punch

This delicious cocktail needn’t be reserved only for parties and gatherings! If you want to make a single serving or two for a casual weeknight happy hour, it couldn’t be easier.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup (4 ounces) unfiltered spiced apple cider
  • 2 ounces spiced rum
  • ½ ounce  orange liqueur
  • 3 slices of unpeeled orange
  • 3 slices of fresh apple
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise pod
  • A pinch of whole cloves
  • ¼ ounce brown sugar syrup, or to taste (optional)
  • Ice for serving

Instructions

  1. Combine all of the ingredients except for ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake well for several seconds.
  2. For best results, chill the drink in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. If you prefer to serve immediately, skip this step. The flavors won’t be as developed, but the drink will still taste great.
  3. Pour the mixture into a glass with ice. Do not strain; we want the fruit and spices in the drink.
  4. Enjoy!

Variations

Try a different juice: rather than (or in addition to) apple cider, consider trying the cocktail with pear juice, orange juice, or cranberry juice. Keep in mind the sweetness will vary with different juices.

Add ginger beer: give the cocktail some bubbles and spicy ginger flavor with a splash of ginger beer. Be sure to adjust the amount of syrup to suit your personal preference as the ginger beer will make it sweeter. Club soda will also add some bubbles without the added sweetness.

Make it with hard cider: for an extra boozy, bubbly rum punch recipe, try hard cider instead of regular pressed cider.

Add different ingredients to the syrup: level up your syrup from the regular brown sugar syrup. Simmer the syrup with fresh ginger, mulling spices, or orange peels to infuse it with extra flavor. Be sure to strain the syrup once it’s cooled and store it in the fridge.

How to Make Brown Sugar Simple Syrup

  1. Combine one cup of brown sugar with one cup of water in a small saucepan.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then turn it down to low and allow the mixture to simmer.
  3. Continue simmering for about 10 minutes, then remove from heat.
  4. Allow the syrup to cool before using in cocktails.
